About this worksheet and test generator
Most classroom assessments need more variety than multiple-choice alone — a genuine mix of question types tends to test understanding better than one format repeated forty times. This tool covers six: multiple choice, true/false, short answer, essay questions with real writing space, fill-in-the-blank, and matching — organised into named sections, with point values that total automatically and a separate, clearly marked answer key.
Questions are entered as plain text, one per line, each starting with its type. A line starting with # begins a new named section — "Section A: Vocabulary", "Section B: Short Answer", however you want to organise the test. Multiple choice takes a question, its options, and which option number is correct; matching takes a left column, a right column, and the correct pairings; fill-in-the-blank takes an ordinary sentence with the answer marked in double brackets, which prints as a blank line in the exact right place and the correct word in the answer key.
Essay questions get a genuine block of ruled writing space — you set how many lines — rather than the single line a short-answer question gets, since a paragraph answer and a one-line answer need visibly different amounts of room. Short-answer and essay questions do not appear with a filled-in answer in the key, since they are open-ended by nature; everything else — multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank and matching — gets its correct answer shown clearly.
Because a real test can run to any length, this document is not confined to a single page the way most printables here are: it flows across as many pages as the content needs, keeping each question intact rather than splitting one across a page break, and the answer key always starts fresh on its own page so it can be photocopied separately or simply not handed out with the test itself.

How is this different from the Quiz Maker tool?
Quiz Maker covers multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer with several independently shuffled versions to reduce copying — that shuffling is its whole point. This tool covers more question types (essay, fill-in-the-blank, matching) organised into formal sections, but only ever produces one version, not several shuffled ones.
How do I write a fill-in-the-blank question?
Write the sentence normally with the answer inside double brackets, for example BLANK | 2 | The chemical symbol for water is [[H2O]]. The printed test shows a blank line where the brackets were; the answer key shows H2O.
How do matching questions work?
List each correct pair as left=right, for example Paris=France. The test prints the left items numbered down one column and the right items lettered down another in a different, scrambled order, with a blank beside each number to write in the matching letter. The answer key shows the correct pairings.
Why don't short-answer and essay questions show an answer in the key?
They are open-ended by design — there usually is not one single correct wording to display. The other four question types have a definite correct answer, so those are the ones the key fills in.
Can a test run to multiple pages?
Yes, and it normally will once you add enough questions — that is expected here, unlike most single-page printables on this site. The layout keeps each question together rather than splitting one across a page break, and the answer key always begins on a fresh page.
